Dr. John L. Clayton offers a thoughtful combination of surgical expertise and personalized patient care at 22 Plastic Surgery. As a board-certified plastic surgeon experienced in both surgical and nonsurgical aesthetic treatments, Dr. Clayton is committed to helping patients look and feel their best while maintaining a natural appearance. He takes the time to understand each patient’s individual goals and develops customized treatment plans designed to create proportionate, refined results. With an emphasis on patient comfort, education, and open communication, Dr. Clayton strives to make every patient feel confident and cared for throughout their aesthetic experience.
Dr. Clayton began his academic path with a strong foundation in public health, earning a Ph.D. in epidemiology from Tulane University. He then pursued his medical degree at Louisiana State University before going on to complete a general surgery residency at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. He finished his specialized training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of North Carolina Hospitals.
Dr. Clayton is board-certified in plastic surgery and previously in general surgery. Prior to joining 22 Plastic Surgery, he was Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at Intermountain Riverton Hospital for 13 years.
As part of his commitment to advancing the field of plastic surgery, Dr. Clayton has dedicated much of his career to research on a variety of topics, including breast cancer and reconstruction. He has published 24 peer-reviewed articles and has given more than 50 presentations to the medical community. Additionally, as a former member of the editorial board for the Annals of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Clayton remains closely connected to new advancements in the field, allowing him to incorporate the latest techniques into his work at our Cottonwood Heights, UT practice.
Dr. Clayton follows a proud family tradition, representing the third generation of plastic surgeons in the Clayton family. His grandfather, Dr. John L. Clayton Sr., established Clayton Plastic Surgery in 1963 where he was later joined by his two sons. Dr. Clayton’s father, Dr. John N. Clayton, practiced alongside his brother until his retirement in 2017. Throughout their history, the doctors have set the highest standards in aesthetic care, consistently striving to exceed patient expectations. This legacy of quality, integrity, and dedication is the foundation upon which Dr. Clayton continues to build his own practice.
