What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a procedure designed to lift and rejuvenate the upper and lower eyelids, creating a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

Blepharoplasty can be done on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both during the same procedure.

Upper eyelid surgery lifts and tightens loose skin to reduce the hooded, sagging appearance and improve the field of vision.

Lower blepharoplasty reduces or eliminates puffy bags and dark circles to achieve a smoother, more rested, youthful appearance.

Blepharoplasty is designed to resolve the following concerns:

  • Lax skin around the eyes
  • Sagging, hooded eyelids
  • Reduced field of vision caused by drooping eyelid skin
  • Tension headaches caused by muscle strain due to sagging skin
  • Excess fat or puffiness under the eyes causing under-eye bags
  • Wrinkles around the eyes
  • A tired, grouchy appearance around the eyes
  • Dark circles or hollows under the eyes

What are the benefits of blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty provides significant benefits for those who are suffering from any of the above concerns, achieving a more alert, naturally-youthful appearance. Further benefits include the following:

  • Improved field of vision
  • Eliminated skin irritation from rubbing eyelid folds
  • Greatly reduced eye bags
  • Minimized hollows and dark circles
  • A rejuvenated, more youthful appearance
  • A more youthful contour under the eyes
  • Reduced forehead straining and tension headaches
  • Lifted, refreshed-looking eyes

Am I a candidate for blepharoplasty?

Candidates for blepharoplasty in Salt Lake City at 22 Plastic Surgery would like to tighten sagging eyelid skin and achieve a more youthful appearance around their eyes. Ideal candidates meet the following general requirements:

  • Are generally in good health
  • Are not taking or can stop taking blood-thinning medications or supplements
  • Have no medical conditions or eye conditions
  • Are not smokers
  • Have realistic expectations for what a blepharoplasty procedure can achieve

What happens during the blepharoplasty procedure?

Blepharoplasty is typically performed using local anesthesia but can be done under general anesthesia if you prefer. The procedure begins with a small incision made in the crease of the upper and/or lower eyelid.

During upper eyelid surgery, the extra skin is removed and the skin is tightened over the eyelids to provide a naturally-youthful appearance. During lower eyelid surgery, the incision is made within the inside or on the outside of the lower lid, and the ligaments of the lower lid are tightened to achieve a better muscle structure. Fat tissue is repositioned and the skin is resettled to remove bags or puffiness and create a smooth, full, contour between the eye and the cheekbone.

Once the procedure is complete, the eyelid incisions are closed with absorbable sutures or biological glues. Your blepharoplasty will take one or two hours.

What is the recovery & results from blepharoplasty?

Expect swelling and bruising around your eyes during your recovery period, which should fade in approximately two weeks. Most patients feel able to return to work after about one week, but the amount of downtime required to adequately rest and recuperate varies from patient to patient.

Do not wear contacts until ten days have passed, and sleep on your back to keep any pressure off of your eyes for 1-2 weeks. You may resume strenuous exercise again after 3-4 weeks.

Your results will be apparent in 1-2 weeks, once the swelling fully subsides. You can expect a rejuvenated, natural-looking, more youthful appearance. The eyelids and area around the eyes will be tighter and smoother, and there will be fewer wrinkles or other signs of age. Upper blepharoplasty results will last between five and seven years, while lower blepharoplasty results are essentially permanent, often lasting for more than 20 years.
