Labiaplasty On the Rise: 5 Facts to Know

Age and pregnancy can change a woman’s body in unexpected ways. Intimate areas can lose shape and feel uncomfortable, creating a sense of insecurity during sexual intimacy. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

If you experience emotional or physical discomfort because of these types of changes, the solution might be labiaplasty. Women from Draper and Salt Lake City who travel to our Midvale practice often feel embarrassed asking questions about labiaplasty, so here are some facts to help your research.

Fact #1: Labiaplasty and vaginal rejuvenation are not the same thing.

If you have done research into labiaplasty, you might have also read information about vaginal rejuvenation. Even though many people consider labiaplasty and vaginal rejuvenation to be the same, they are quite different procedures. Both deal with the same region of the body. But they provide unique cosmetic and functional benefits.

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that removes overhanging, drooping labia minora (the inner vaginal lips) to help reduce discomfort and enhance appearance. Vaginal rejuvenation, on the other hand, includes nonsurgical treatments designed to improve issues such as dryness, itching, and skin laxity.

Fact #2: Labiaplasty is more popular than ever.

Between 2015 and 2016, the number of labiaplasty surgeries increased by 23%. As more women seek to enhance the appearance of their vagina, they are also interested in addressing the physical discomfort often associated with excess labia minora tissue.

Women may feel physical discomfort when wearing yoga pants, being sexually intimate, or even just sitting on a bicycle seat. These everyday discomforts can now be avoided thanks to labiaplasty.

Fact #3: Labiaplasty is usually a one-time procedure.

Unlike nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, labiaplasty results last over time. Surgery does not need to be redone because of things like aging, gravity, having children, or entering menopause.

Fact #4: Labiaplasty is generally not painful.

Contrary to popular belief, labiaplasty tends to be a fairly painless procedure. Even though it is scary to think about altering one of the most sensitive parts of the body, modern surgical techniques have made labiaplasty a relatively straight-forward procedure with predictable results.

Discomfort can be easily managed with the pain medication provided after your operation. Discomfort usually fades after only a few days.

Fact #5: Recovery is typically quick and simple.

Most patients report a fairly easy recovery. Women tend to take up to 1 week off work and are advised to wear loose comfortable pants. I recommend avoiding strenuous activities for at least 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure. Swelling and soreness goes down after a few days.
