Earlobe Repair Surgery

Over the two decades, earlobe gauges have become more and more popular. For those who began gauging more than a decade ago, they may no longer be wearing gauges. Whether you have changed styles, have a professional job that won’t allow it, or have experienced some kind of complication. Earlobe repair surgery can help create a more aesthetic lobe.

What Is Gauging?

Gauging is the process of piercing your ears and slowly inserting larger and larger piercings. Gauges, also referred to as cogs, caps or plugs, are a form of tissue expansion of the earlobe. The gauge is placed in the earlobe, where it remains until the lobe has healed. The gauge is then replaced with increasingly larger gauges to attain the diameter goal.  Once you decide you no longer want to wear your gauges, you are left with very large holes in the lobes of your ears. The skin stretches as well, since it is made mostly of fatty tissue and is not strong enough to hold up against the weight of the gauges that stretch the tissue out of shape. Many of our patients who come to us for ear lobe surgery are self-conscious about the appearance of their ears. Fortunately, the plastic surgeons at 22 Plastic Surgery can repair the holes and the damaged lobes and restore a more natural-looking ear.

Earlobe Repair and Earlobe Reduction Surgery

To repair the damaged earlobe, your surgeon will need to remove the gauged area and reconstruct the lobe. In most cases, depending on how large the gauges are, this will result in a smaller ear lobe than what you have before. Recovery is straightforward: you will be bandaged with a pressure bandage for the first 24 hours, after which you’ll be instructed to treat the healing area with bacitracin and over it was a bandage.
