5 Questions to Ask at Your Labiaplasty Consultation

Requesting a labiaplasty consultation at my practices serving Midvale and Salt Lake City, UT, can be an intimidating first step, but there’s no reason to be shy. My job as your surgeon is to support you on your journey to rediscovering confidence in your body. That means answering any questions you may have and facilitating an open and honest conversation about your goals.

Many women aren’t sure where to start or what to ask at this appointment. Here are a few suggestions for questions that will help you feel informed and prepared for your next steps.

How much will my surgery cost?
There shouldn’t be any surprises when it comes to the cost of your surgery. At your consultation, you should receive a personalized quote for your procedure that includes anesthesia fees, facility fees, and any other costs. You’ll have the opportunity to meet with a financial counselor who will be happy to discuss everything you need to know about financing your surgery. Where will my surgery be performed?
Plastic surgeons have the option of performing procedures in various settings, from hospitals to on-site surgical centers. Don’t hesitate to ask about where your surgery will take place and why that location was selected. Check that the facility is accredited and has a strong safety record. What should I expect for recovery?
This is one of the questions I am asked most frequently in consultations, and it’s easy to understand why. With any surgery, you should know upfront how long you can expect to be away from work, the gym, and other daily activities. At your consultation, we’ll discuss recovery timelines along with what you can expect for at-home care and follow-up appointments. Are you board certified?
It’s essential to work with a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, which represents a high level of training and standards of practice. My board certification reflects my dedication to keeping my surgical skills sharp and creating superior results. I’ll be happy to discuss any questions you may have about my qualifications during our initial meeting. Which type of anesthesia will I receive?
Anesthesia is a common source of uncertainty for anyone undergoing a plastic surgery procedure, but discussing it ahead of time can help ease these worries. We can discuss the type of anesthesia I’ll use, your anesthesiologist’s credentials, and any side effects or risks you need to know about. My team and I want to make sure you feel educated and confident about this and every aspect of your procedure.

Breast Augmentation: It’s All About Proportion

Choosing a size for breast augmentation at my practices serving Midvale and Salt Lake City can be challenging for some women. They worry about finding a balance between a noticeable size increase and negative side effects associated with overly large breasts, such as back pain. It’s a common concern, but there’s a simple answer for it: proportion.

In this blog post, I’d like to discuss why proportion is the secret to attractive and sustainable breast augmentation results you can feel comfortable with and confident about for years to come.

Avoiding the Negatives

It’s true that there are negatives associated with larger breasts, including back pain, difficulty exercising, rashes, and trouble finding flattering clothes. It’s also common for a large bust to overwhelm the frame and conceal attractive body contours. However, these issues are typically caused by out-of-balance proportions.

Though it seems counterintuitive, the goals of breast augmentation and breast reduction are mostly the same: to create a size that flatters your figure while allowing you to be physically comfortable. Breast reduction does this by removing volume, while breast augmentation does this by adding volume.

When your surgeon takes your frame and proportions into account when selecting an implant size, you can avoid these size-related complications or concerns. This approach can achieve fullness and volume minus the unwanted side effects.

Finding Your Own Ideal Size

Another idea that it’s important to keep in mind when it comes to proportion is that cup sizes and implant sizes look different on different people. While it’s great to have an idea of the look you’re going for based on inspiration from celebrities, family, and friends, try not to be married to specific measurements. I can create the same effect for you, but the actual sizes may be different because the size and shape of your body may be different.

In addition to physical considerations, your lifestyle needs, such as fitness goals, are just as important to take into account. Making sure your implant size will be sustainable for you and your activity level is key when it comes to lasting satisfaction.

Your Consultation

All of these factors come together at your consultation, where we’ll work together to select an ideal size for your unique proportions and desired results. This involves taking precise measurements and having an in-depth conversation about your long-term goals for your implants.

This conversation sets the stage for a breast augmentation approach that is tailored specifically to you and your body—an approach you can count on for results that flatter your shape without causing discomfort.

When Is A Mini Tummy Tuck Worth It?

While tummy tucks offer significant improvements for those with lax midsection skin, many people are intrigued by the mini tummy tuck variation offered at my practices serving Midvale and Salt Lake City. This approach can involve less recovery time and smaller incisions—but that doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone.

When is this modified procedure worth it, and when is a full tummy tuck a better approach? This blog post will discuss the differences in these procedures and who may be a strong candidate for each.

How is a mini tummy tuck different than a full tummy tuck?

Full tummy tucks differ from mini tummy tucks in a few key ways.

  • Corrections: A mini tummy tuck only addresses concerns below the bellybutton, whereas a full tummy tuck tightens skin on the entire abdomen.
  • Incisions: Mini tummy tuck incisions are smaller than full tummy tuck incisions, though they’re both located low on the abdomen and can be easily hidden even under bikini bottoms. A full tummy tuck also involves an incision around the belly button, which is not necessary with a mini tummy tuck.
  • Recovery: Mini tummy tuck recovery is typically shorter than full tummy tuck recovery.

Who is a candidate for a mini tummy tuck?

An ideal candidate for a mini tummy tuck is someone whose primary concern is sagging skin or protrusion of the lower abdomen. If you’re happy with the way most of your abdomen looks but are bothered by sagging or a “pooch” below your belly button, this may be a strong option for you.

Ideal candidates should be at or near their ideal weight and in good general health. It’s wise to wait until you’re finished having children, as pregnancy can stretch the skin and alter your long-term results.

Are there other tummy tuck variations?

Yes. For those looking for more corrections than those offered by a full tummy tuck, I perform both extended tummy tucks and belt lipectomies, or lower body lifts.

An extended tummy tuck tightens loose skin on the hips and flanks as well as the abdomen. This procedure is common among people who have experienced major weight loss. The incision extends the traditional tummy tuck incision beyond the hips to the lower back.

A belt lipectomy, or lower body lift, brings the incision 360 degrees around the body, allowing for skin tightening around the entire trunk.

It’s common for people choosing these approaches to combine them with other lifting procedures, such a breast lift or facelift.

How can I decide which procedure is right for me?

The best way to decide is to visit my practice for a consultation. Using my many years of training and experience, I’ll be able to recommend the right approach for you after an in-person exam and thorough discussion about your goals.

Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Lift? Should I Combine Procedures?

Breast augmentation patients who travel from Draper and the Salt Lake City area to my Midvale practice often ask if they can get the results they want with breast implants alone, or if a breast lift is also necessary. This is especially true for women who have had children or whose skin is losing its elasticity because of age.

It’s understandable that patients want to avoid the incisions needed for breast lift surgery, but if I’ll recommend combining the procedures if I believe they will be unhappy with the outcome of breast augmentation alone. In this blog post, I’ll explain the factors involved in making that decision and the benefits of combining a breast lift with implants.

The Basics

First of all, it’s important to know the background information for each procedure. Both surgeries involve improving the appearance of the breasts, but the techniques used differ.

A breast lift re-shapes the breasts and it is designed to correct sagging caused by aging or pregnancy. This is fixed by raising the position of breasts along the chest wall. A breast augmentation, on the other hand, is aimed at creating more full or symmetrical breasts with the use of implants. These results are more focused on breast size than breast placement.

Some patients ask if breast implants can give their breasts a lifted appearance. In a few cases involving women who get smaller implants, that can be the result. But usually implants will make breasts sag even more because of the additional weight.

Combining Procedures

Age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and loss of skin elasticity naturally cause breasts to sag and look deflated. A breast lift is designed for a subtle, more youthful look by improving the breasts’ position on the chest. A breast augmentation is designed to enhance breast size, symmetry, and body proportions. More and more women are having both procedures done at once to:

  • Maximize their results
  • Minimize risks
  • Save money
  • Reduce recovery time

Both options are great for improving a woman’s overall sense of femininity. When used together, the results are even more flattering and transformative.

Exploring Your Options

When deciding whether to get an individual procedure or combine the two, there are many factors to consider. Some of these factors include:

  • If you plan to become pregnant in the future
  • The frequency and intensity of your exercise routine
  • If you belong to more liberal or more modest social circles

Considering all of these factors might feel overwhelming at first. But a general rule is that placing an implant in a sagging or droopy breast is not ideal – and therefore requires more than one procedure.

There is no set age that a woman should consider breast augmentation or a breast lift. The important thing to remember is that if you are not happy and confident with the appearance of your breasts, then it might be time to explore procedure options.

Tummy Tuck & Liposuction: What You Need to Know

Sagging skin and stubborn fat deposits are some of the most difficult parts of weight loss. For people who would like to remove fat, slim their waist, or repair weak abdominal muscles, combining liposuction with a tummy tuck is an excellent solution. My patients from Draper, Salt Lake City, and beyond have enjoyed great results from these 2 treatments. In this post, we’ll explore the basics and benefits of these popular body contouring procedures.

Understanding Fat

Our bodies naturally store fat in certain areas of the body (such as the thighs, upper arms, or mid-section). These areas can be extremely difficult to slim down—no matter how much you exercise or diet. Various nonsurgical treatments aim to offer similar results to a tummy tuck or liposuction, but the effects are much more noticeable with surgical procedures, resulting in higher patient satisfaction rates.

Tummy Tuck & Liposuction 101

A tummy tuck involves removing excess skin and tissue from the midsection. In most cases, I make a horizontal incision as low as possible on the abdomen, so it’s hidden below the bikini line. In a few cases, if a patient’s concerns are limited to below the belly button, I can use a shorter incision. During the procedure, I tighten the abdominal muscles, if necessary, and remove excess skin before closing the incision. To create a smooth contour, I typically use liposuction for the surrounding area.

During a liposuction procedure, I insert a thin metal surgical tube called a cannula. The cannula breaks up and loosens fat so it can be suctioned from the body. The result is a more defined, contoured look than what a tummy tuck alone can produce.

Here’s an easy way to think about these procedures: tummy tucks are designed to slim and contour your figure, whereas liposuction is designed to mainly remove unwanted fat cells. Because their functions are different, combining these procedures (like in the “mommy makeover”) is a common way to achieve optimal results.

Which Is Right for You?

Although it may be easy to identify the differences of these procedures, it can be difficult to know if it is the right time to explore getting a tummy tuck, liposuction or both.

People at or near the weight at which they are comfortable may benefit from a tummy tuck alone. But patients who cannot get rid of stubborn fat areas are good candidates for combining liposuction with a tummy tuck. Beyond this, there are many lifestyle factors that should be considered before committing to one procedure option or another. Part of my job as a plastic surgeon is to help you decide what combination is right for you.

Multiple Options

While this post outlines the traditional methods for tummy tuck and liposuction procedures, Dr. Reuben offers a variety of these procedures to meet individual patient needs. A few of these variations include:

  • Mini tummy tuck
  • Extended tummy tuck
  • Power assisted liposuction
  • Ultrasound assisted liposuction
  • Liposculpture

A tummy tuck or liposuction can address many concerns regarding the midsection, but they are not weight loss procedures. It’s also important to lead a healthy lifestyle after undergoing plastic surgery. Seeing the results produced by these procedures is often one of the first steps patients take when considering plastic surgeons. You can browse our before-and-after gallery of my actual patients. Labiaplasty On the Rise: 5 Facts to Know

Age and pregnancy can change a woman’s body in unexpected ways. Intimate areas can lose shape and feel uncomfortable, creating a sense of insecurity during sexual intimacy. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

If you experience emotional or physical discomfort because of these types of changes, the solution might be labiaplasty. Women from Draper and Salt Lake City who travel to our Midvale practice often feel embarrassed asking questions about labiaplasty, so here are some facts to help your research.

Fact #1: Labiaplasty and vaginal rejuvenation are not the same thing.

If you have done research into labiaplasty, you might have also read information about vaginal rejuvenation. Even though many people consider labiaplasty and vaginal rejuvenation to be the same, they are quite different procedures. Both deal with the same region of the body. But they provide unique cosmetic and functional benefits.

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that removes overhanging, drooping labia minora (the inner vaginal lips) to help reduce discomfort and enhance appearance. Vaginal rejuvenation, on the other hand, includes nonsurgical treatments designed to improve issues such as dryness, itching, and skin laxity.

Fact #2: Labiaplasty is more popular than ever.

Between 2015 and 2016, the number of labiaplasty surgeries increased by 23%. As more women seek to enhance the appearance of their vagina, they are also interested in addressing the physical discomfort often associated with excess labia minora tissue.

Women may feel physical discomfort when wearing yoga pants, being sexually intimate, or even just sitting on a bicycle seat. These everyday discomforts can now be avoided thanks to labiaplasty.

Fact #3: Labiaplasty is usually a one-time procedure.

Unlike nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, labiaplasty results last over time. Surgery does not need to be redone because of things like aging, gravity, having children, or entering menopause.

Fact #4: Labiaplasty is generally not painful.

Contrary to popular belief, labiaplasty tends to be a fairly painless procedure. Even though it is scary to think about altering one of the most sensitive parts of the body, modern surgical techniques have made labiaplasty a relatively straight-forward procedure with predictable results.

Discomfort can be easily managed with the pain medication provided after your operation. Discomfort usually fades after only a few days.

Fact #5: Recovery is typically quick and simple.

Most patients report a fairly easy recovery. Women tend to take up to 1 week off work and are advised to wear loose comfortable pants. I recommend avoiding strenuous activities for at least 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure. Swelling and soreness goes down after a few days.
